In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His life was unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was essentially to care for his flock of rams.

Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind across the solo tree on the peak were his only co-dwellers. Day in day, guarding his charges inculcated in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.

However, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome scheme.

Stories of predators preying on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One morning he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.

The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This game persisted for a few more days. However, one day, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no here one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the results of false alarms.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
